WHAT IS A DOULA?
A Doula is a non-medical professional that enhances the childbirth
experience for the mother, her partner, and her family through
knowledge, compassion, and support.
Why choose a Doula?
Peace of mind - Having an experienced and caring person there to meet
the needs of the entire family is a wonderful comfort.
It can reduce stress - A Doula allows the family to focus on each other
during this special time.
Additionally, Doula-attended births often result in:
-
Shorter labor
-
Fewer complications
-
Fewer Cesarean deliveries
-
Reduced need for pain medication and epidurals
-
Reduced use of assertive devices
Doulas do not
provide medical care; nor are they a substitute for your medical
provider.
A Doula.....
- Recognizes birth as a key life experience that the mother will
remember all her life
- Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a
woman in labor
- Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying
out their plans for the birth
- Stays by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire
labor
- Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an
objective viewpoint, and assistance to the woman in getting the
information she needs to make informed decisions
- Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her
partner, and clinical care providers
- Perceives her role as one who nurtures and protects the womans
memory of her birth experience
The word doula comes from a Greek word for the most important
female slave or servant in an ancient Greek household, the woman who
probably helped the lady of the house through childbearing.
Who is eligible for
